TSM 101 - Rapid Prototyping and 3D Scanning

- No classes scheduled at this time -

Rapid Prototyping is one of the hottest new manufacturing topics. In this course we would like to show students how to functionally use RP in the workplace. As with the milling course we will use the rapid prototype machine as a quick way to create molds that we can use for our composite parts. The RPs will frequently have to be strengthened and have a usable mold surface developed. This will be done by each student in class, discussing all the pros and cons along the way. Depending on the product made, rapid prototyping can be a very cost effective way to replace a CNC mill with a much simpler learning curve.
Keeping with our commitment toward new and innovative technology, we've incorporated 3D scanning technology into this course as well. Students will learn how to use the scanner interface, seem scans together, and how to incorporate scanning technology into your existing production.

Topics:
Fixing model defects
Infiltrating the prototype
Mold making from RP
Creating smooth surfaces for RPs
Creating parts from an RP mold
3D Scanner interface
Seeming the scans together
Fixing geometry
Simplifying
Exporting the scan
Importing the scan into CATIA

Prerequisites:
This is an entry level course. A familiarity with computers and machine shop environment is recommended. Those with CATIA experience will be able to work more with the 3D scans, but it is not required.
